WNYMOBILE2012 1309 Required Reading 4.13.2012

Required Reading is a weekly listing of all the bits of visual inspiration, cool videos, news, hip links, and miscellaneous information that rattles my head during the week. The stuff that’s worth bookmarking and gets my brain-juices flowing.

Above: Fashion writer, stylist, educator, and event producer Erin Habes and former Prada VP Joseph Incao at Victory Studios in March styling one of my productions.

I picked up a new book this week called Design is a Job by Mike Monteiro from Mule Design. You might remember Mike’s popular Creative Morning’s video F*ck you. Pay Me. Though the book mainly targets designers, so many of the points it makes are universal and applicable to photographers, film makers, and creatives of all stripes. This book is a must read for creatives who have ever found themselves dealing with feelings of guilt or insecurity about what they charge their clients. You might need to abstract some of the specific ideas to make them apply to your particular field – but this short, entertaining, and informative read has kept me hooked  all day.

Ze Frank is back with a call to action for all those who are just beginning or beginning again, sometimes a big dose of positive thought and the acceptance the reality isn’t as bad as we sometimes think it can be is all you need to find a reinvigorating manifesto and start kicking some ass. I have watched this every morning this week.

Although I feel a little bad for laughing at some of the posts where people just don’t have a handle on Facebook, the sheer insanity that can pop up on this site keeps me coming back when I need to kill a few minutes with some laughter. | Old People Writing on A Restaurants Facebook Page

The Chuck close video is great, but the line later in the post about not cord sourcing your decisions is much-needed advice for those seeking constant and instant social media acceptance of their creative endeavors. | Lessons From Chuck Close

I love Art-o-mats - the idea of retrofitting a vintage cigarette machine to sell unique pieces of small art to the masses is one of sheer brilliance. I get throughly excited every time I see one.

runway poster m3 Runway

Posters that were created for the BSC annual fashion event Runway - A showcase of student fashion design and textile arts. Erin Habes has done an amazing job producing this show year after year for some very talented students, often with the help of top minds in the fashion industry who donate their time to this event for the students. Each production tops the last in scope and ambition. Many of the students involved in the program were actually in studio during this shoot to observe the production of these images – so in addition to the styling/production team and talent it made for a crowded but fun set.

Special thanks to the team at Block Club for the poster design, all the students involved, the whole production team, and Erin Habes and Joseph Incao (Former Senior VP of Prada Retail Operations) for styling these images.

A highlight of my recent west coast trip, I am not generally a proponent of fast food, but I make an exception for In-N-Out

I love that sign, it is like a shining beacon in the desert saying “this way to delicious”

Luke Copping 0 Papercut Magazine

Kyle Makrauer and I recently collaborated on an online feature for Papercut Magazine that delved deeper into Molly Hoeltke’s reclaimed fashion concept label Once Vintage - a design label I have shot with before. I very rarely find myself collaborating with another photographer in such a direct way as I did on this shoot, but Kyle and I wanted to try it as an experiment.

Below is a small gallery of my contribution to the project, you can see the rest of the images including those shot by Kyle on Papercut’s web feature.

DS20120317 1038 Edit Light Test Tom Newton

RIT Photography student Tom Newton visited the set of a production at Victory Studios in Buffalo a few weeks ago to check out how one of my shoots flows. Naturally he was pressed into service as a stand in for this test shot that I ended up really liking. You should totally visit Tom’s portfolio site – he creates some really wonderful images.

WNYMOBILE2012 1342 Common Structures

Everything looks more interesting in the rain.

Now that spring is here the rainy season has officially started and everyday structures have started looking a lot more interesting to me. Above are the stairs up to the roof at Victory Studios, which opens up to one of the best views in the city. Below is the sinister looking gazebo belonging to the apartment complex across the street from my house.

Who would have thought that hacking a Piccolette Contessa-Nettel (1926) on to a Canon 5dMKII would yield such pretty results. For the hardcore retro gear nerds out there.

After a coffee/keyboard incident earlier this week I have decided that one of these is a necessary addition to my office.

Photographic explorations of a singular subculture always fascinate me. I really like Andrew Shaylor’s study on the rockabilly scene that I found on Behance recently.

DS20120317 1188 Edit Dakotah Schickling

I made these images of Dakotah recently,  during a test session on what coincidentally happened to be her birthday.  Dakotah and I have had many near misses on assignments prior to this – often coming very close to working together but never quite being in the same place at the same time due to scheduling differences. It took our mutual friend/stylist Nicole Barry to finally introduce us in person last month and make arrangements for this Happy Birthday shoot to happen.
